I found an interesting rant in my binder earlier. I wrote it on a peice the back of a sheet one day while a paticularily annoying student was arguing with my english teacher on her opinions. I was immediatly enraged, "Why should 1 student hold up the class?" I thought. The debate was on how highschool was a difficult place for any student. The teacher stated that it was, which was related to, and supported by, the short story we had just finnished. However after stating this 1 student decided to argue this point, boasting on about how easy she had found the highschool experience to be.
Now, I am not saying who should have one this argument, highschool can be a high point or a low, but rather that this argument should never have happened.
It happens quite often in classes that cover an opinion topic. After stating an opinion, often presented in a book, a student will decide to prove that this opinion is wrong by simply stating "it doesn't happen to me", as though their argument will change the opinions of a book, or change the assignment related to the book. All it does is hold up the class.
This was the rant:
"I understand one's need to believe in their own knowledge, to flaunt their opinions as absolute. But even though they have an opinion, or life experience, it doesnot mean that they are fit to showcase their beliefs. There is a reason that opinionated students are not alowed to stand infront of a class and teach. It is a simple matter of their arguments exsisting for the sake of arguing. When a teacher states the opinions of a book, it is not an open invitation to stand up and say that the book is wrong. It is an invitation to learn. To understand that there are other ideas and opinions out there that conflict with your own. And most importantly, it is a chance to sit down, shut up, and listen to what the person who spent years of their life dedicated to understanding the opinions speak. Somtimes i dont want to hear your opinion. Somtimes i want to hear the teacher."
